Where is Legionella found?

Legionella bacteria are naturally found in freshwater environments like lakes, rivers, and reservoirs. However, they become a particular health concern when they grow in artificial water systems, including hot and cold water systems, cooling towers, and spa pools as these are frequently used by people.

Any water system can support Legionella growth if conditions such as stagnant water, warm temperatures, and the presence of nutrients are present. The risk increases significantly in areas where water is stored or recirculated, especially if it can be released into the air as breathable aerosols.

We provide clients with the reassurance that they are maintaining safe water systems that comply with relevant Legislation, British Standards and the HSE’s Approved Code of Practice.
